What is the Akatsuki?

The Akatsuki was originally founded by Yahiko, who grew up as a war orphan in Amegakure and was trained by Jiraiya. Together with Nagato and Konan, he formed the organization with the goal of achieving peace without relying on force.

More people came to share the group’s ideals, and the Akatsuki grew in influence [1]
However, Hanzō — the leader of Amegakure — feared the Akatsuki’s rise and set a trap for Yahiko’s group. Yahiko sacrificed his life to save Konan. Nagato then became the second leader, but as he lost more comrades, his ideals began to warp.

Nagato rises as the new leader after Yahiko’s death [2]
The Akatsuki gradually transformed into a small criminal organization made up of S-rank criminals. Their objective became collecting the tailed beasts and creating a forbidden weapon powerful enough to wipe out even the great nations — distributing it to enforce peace through fear and deterrence.

The Rinnegan-Wielding Leader – Pain (Nagato)

The symbolic leader of the Akatsuki. Possessing the rare dōjutsu known as the Rinnegan, Pain fights by controlling multiple bodies simultaneously. “Pain” refers to the six corpses remotely controlled by Nagato. Each body is assigned one of the Six Paths—Deva Path, Asura Path, Human Path, Animal Path, Preta Path, and Naraka Path—each with its own unique ability.

The Quietly Resolute Heart of Akatsuki – Konan

Calm and composed, Konan possesses a unique ninjutsu that allows her to manipulate paper at will.
As a co-founder of the Akatsuki alongside Nagato and Yahiko, she remained steadfast in her support of Pain (Nagato) until the very end.

Revered as an “angel” in the Hidden Rain Village she governed with Pain [8]

The Shadowy Operative – Zetsu

A mysterious being composed of two halves—Black Zetsu and White Zetsu—each with distinct personalities and the ability to separate. Acting as a spy and intelligence gatherer, Zetsu operates behind the scenes. In the final stages of the story, it is revealed that Black Zetsu is the physical manifestation of the will of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, the ancient being who once brought peace to a chaotic world.

Though known for annihilating his own clan, his actions were a painful choice made to protect both his village and his younger brother, Sasuke. Bearing this burden alone, he lived and died without revealing the truth.
