What is Attack on Titan?

Attack on Titan is a manga by Hajime Isayama serialized in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine between 2009 and 2021. The story is set in a world where people live enclosed within giant walls to protect themselves from invading Titans. When a Colossal Titan suddenly breaches the wall, protagonist Eren’s mother is killed by the Titan, and Eren vows revenge, joining the Survey Corps to fight back against the creatures. This is a dark fantasy series that captivates readers with its diverse characters and intense battle scenes as it delves into the truth behind the Titans’ existance.

Where are the real-life locations of Attack on Titan?

The real-life locations of Attack on Titan include the city of Carcassonne in France and the town of Nördlingen in Germany. Both are known for their surrounding walls, making them popular tourist destinations amongst core fans who consider them models for the series. This time I visited Nördlingen!

How to get to Nördlingen

Nördlingen is a town in Bavaria, southern Germany, known for being located in a crater formed by a meteorite impact. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but you can get there in about two hours by BD (Deutsche Bahn) from Munich Central Station.

Explore Nördlingen

It takes about five minutes on foot from the station to the historical old town, which is surrounded by stone walls. There are five gates into the old town but it’s recommended to enter through the Reimlinger Tor as you can quickly access the top of the wall from there.

There’s a map right next to the gate where you can check your current location and destination.

The height of the wall varies, with a maximum of about 15 meters.

The top of the wall is a walkway, and it takes about an hour to walk around. Enjoy the medieval atmosphere of the town!
