Isekai Manga Review “Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero”

  • japanese : Lv1魔王とワンルーム勇者 (Lv1 Maou to One Room Yuusha)
  • Author: toufu (pixiv)
  • An original isekai series by the manga artist
  • Story pattern after defeating the Demon Lord
  • An anime-adapted, high-quality isekai manga (from Houbunsha)

The term “isekai manga” is sometimes used in a way that suggests mass-produced, template settings, so it’s questionable whether to include this work, but
it’s set in a pseudo-medieval European world beloved by the Japanese, with the typical hero and Demon Lord structure, so we’ll treat it as an isekai manga.

From the Creator of Golduck Manga, a Guaranteed Success

toufu, the author, is famous on pixiv for creating a manga about Pokémon’s Golduck.
It’s a wonderful manga featuring a grumpy Hikari and a taciturn Golduck.
You can still view it on pixiv.

Given that it’s a commercial work by this author, it’s bound to be interesting.

Perfect Balance of Gags and Story in the Hero’s After-Story

Lv1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero - Page of the Useless Hero
toufu, “Lv1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero” Vol. 1, p18, 2020

To put it simply, the story is about
a hero who lives in a one-room apartment in a down-and-out manner after defeating the Demon Lord, and the resurrected, now-young Demon Lord who starts living with him, leading to slapstick situations.
It’s similar to the popular “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” in that it’s a story set after the Demon Lord is defeated.

The story progresses in a relatively gag-heavy atmosphere due to the art style, but at the same time, a solid storyline also advances, making it an enjoyable read.
It feels like the author truly loves manga and became a manga artist to draw manga (I don’t know the actual situation), rather than just transitioning from an illustrator.
Somehow, it has the atmosphere of a traditional manga that inherits the good aspects of old manga.

Distinctive Art Style with Just the Right Touch of Mild Eroticism

As it’s a manga for all ages, of course, there are no excessive depictions, but there is a certain degree of sexiness. However, that’s not the main focus.

toufu, “Lv1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero” Vol. 1, p6, 2020

It’s obviously unnecessary sexy clothing, but we crave such elements, so it’s greatly appreciated.
As you can see, the art style has a certain quirkiness? It becomes addictive as you read on.
In my opinion, works with a unique art style seem to bring out a warmth in the characters as you progress through the story, don’t they?

No Frustration with the Characters

When the protagonist is portrayed as a useless person, it can be frustrating to deal with an indecisive hero, right?
Managing the hate towards a useless protagonist is quite difficult.

Although the hero leads a self-indulgent life filled with cynicism, he’s fundamentally a decent person, so there’s no stress in reading on.
Maybe it’s because I’m also an older man, but he’s one of my favorite protagonists among many manga.

Houbunsha, Familiar with “Manga Time Kirara,” Should Embrace Talented Isekai Manga

This manga is published by Houbunsha.
As you know, they’re famous for moe four-panel comics like “Laid-Back Camp,” “Is the Order a Rabbit?,” and “Bocchi the Rock!”

As a manga to read with a half-open mouth when tired of life, mass-produced isekai manga are very excellent.
However, the isekai genre is already saturated.
We like isekai, but we’re a bit tired of template settings, aren’t we?
So, Houbunsha, please publish more of these talented isekai manga.

Isekai manga with twisted settings like the hero’s after-story are increasingly being released, but with so much room for twists, they could become quite long-lasting content.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to future developments.
