What kind of manga is GANTZ?

GANTZ is a sci-fi action manga by Hiroya Oku, serialized in Weekly Young Jump (Shueisha) from 2000 to 2013. It dynamically depicts battles between humans—who should already be dead—and mysterious aliens, featuring brilliantly designed weapons issued to the players. Defeating enemies earns points, which can be spent to gain freedom, revive teammates, or select more powerful weapons. The straightforward yet gripping storyline gradually unveils the mysteries of GANTZ, making it a masterpiece worth reading over and over again.

Gantz Suit

A powered suit stored inside a case within the mysterious “Gantz Ball.” The suit’s interior is filled with a special liquid that functions as artificial muscle, greatly enhancing the wearer’s physical abilities and defensive power. However, once it takes damage beyond a certain limit, it becomes inoperable. Holsters on the thighs can store weapons like the X-Gun or Y-Gun. According to Nishi, wearing someone else’s suit won’t activate its abilities—each player must use their own assigned suit!

X-Gun

A handy, beginner-friendly firearm. It fires compressed high-energy blasts that cause the target to rupture from the inside. There’s a short time lag between firing and impact, so hitting fast-moving enemies requires skill and timing.

Hard to hit swift enemies [5]
Equipped with a display to see through targets [6]

X-Shotgun

A long-barreled variant of the X-Gun that fires even more powerful energy blasts. It features a stock for stability and a scope for accurate long-range shots. It has two triggers—use the upper one to lock onto multiple enemies, then the lower one to attack them all simultaneously.

Perfect for long-range combat [7]

Y-Gun

A Y-shaped weapon designed to capture and transport targets. It fires three-pronged laser anchors from the muzzle, which spread into capture wires that entangle the target. Anchors are fixed to the ground to restrain the enemy, and pulling the trigger again begins transport to a location Nishi calls “Up.” It has a homing function when locked on, but some powerful foes can cut the wires—using it at the right moment is key.

Controller

A multifunctional device that can display the mission area and target locations, cloak the user by altering frequencies, and even show the remaining mission time.
